Why not save yourself some aggravation and it won’t cost you a thing. Download free, widely used Open Office which is compatible with Microsoft Office.

Try this:

1. Click the Tools->Protect Document menu item.
2. If the sidebar that comes up says This document is protected from unintentional editing, click the Stop Protection button at the bottom.
3. Hopefully, you won’t receive a Password-entry dialog box. If you do, that file is password protected. Ask the sender for the password.
4. The file should now be available for editing.

Hope that helps.
