Wanting to run a few Windows only programs / software on my new Intel-based Mac, running OS X. Looks like OEM is cheaper, but do you have to “buy a motherboard”, etc?? I have a Dell desktop & the XP discs – is that feasible/legal? I’m also a teacher, so if anyone knows of a discount for educators, that would really help. Thanks

If u have the windows stickers that come with ur Dell pc then u could install windows from one of the XP discs in parallels and use that key. The key that comes with ur pc technically hasnt been used yet so they work. Only thing is u have to call microsoft to activate that key since microsoft made it a rule that OEM keys have to be activated over phone and not over internet. Other than that I’ve used this in VMWARE with pretty good results. As for being a teacher, I know that microsoft has discounts on Their office software (office 07 or 03). If u do by chance need to use microsoft office i implore u to consider using a free open source office suite called OpenOffice.org, which is also their website. Its fully compatible with all microsoft products. Good luck.

‘Dell desktop’ – how old is it? You can try to install the XP software on the Dell, but no guarantee it will work unless the Windows sticker says ‘XP’ on it. Open Office has been relocated to sourceforge.net – and is now fully linked up with the open source community, which is a very happy event!
