I want to buy a discount PC online from a reputable source. The only problem is that it has been wiped of all software including operating system software. I’m not sure what all that means, but I assume that means it won’t even have Windows.
If it doesn’t even have Windows, will it even run? What software would I need to put on it? Where can I find this software? How do I put it on it? Would it just be better to either use an expert to do this or buy a PC with operating system software?

This source isn’t very reputable if they sold the PC without Windows and not telling you what to do.

You can install Linux, but this is VERY different from Windows, in the sense the average joe should stay well alone.

Is there a license sticker on the back? If so, ask your seller for the disc to go with and install it using this licence number.

just means you need o obtain a copy of windows whether its xp, vista, or 7 doesnt matter (it usually says on the computer. whether you do it legally or not is your choice. if you want free legal software you can download a copy of ubuntu from http://www.ubuntu.com/
its free (legally) and not hard to figure out. only problem is it doesnt support all windows wireless cards so you might have to use an ethernet cable until you get a copy of windows.

Without some sort of OS you’ve just basically bought yourself a lump of electronics and hardware. An operating system is the stuff that lets you do something useful with the hardware.

So long as the hardware and firmware (BIOS) is working there is nothing wrong with buying a computer this way. It just means you have to install an OS on it when you get it.

The OS could be one that you lying around belonging to a PC you no longer use, Windows XP for example. If you want to use Windows but don’t have a disk make sure the hardware is compatible with whatever hardware you’re going to get. Don’t buy say, Windows 7, for hardware that’s not going to support it. or is going to run so slowly it’s a pain to use.

Or you could be a bit more adventurous and use a version of Linux, which won’t cost you anything. I use Fedora but the most popular version is probably Ubuntu. There are loads of other versions – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions

Installing an OS isn’t that hard, just time consuming. Just follow the prompts and you’ll be fine.

Whatever OS you go with, then there is loads of good free software available, if cost is your concern. I’ve never had to pay for any software on my Linux PC, and the only paid for software on my Windows machines are MS Office and Adobe CS. Both of which are expensive but worth it to me.
