Very few of the graphics sites that claim they are offering OEM software are actually offering legitimate copies.
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer and it references software that was sold directly to a manufacturer for far less than you would get it at retail. HOWEVER — OEM software is only legal if used on the HARDWARE that it was originally sold with. In other words, if you try to use it on a different computer, you are in violation of the terms of use. You’re using a pirated copy. Most OEM programs do not come with Bundled license agreements – and this especially true for the graphics programs.
If it’s too good to be true (i.e., Photoshop for under $ 100) then it fell off the back of the truck.
Now – how to get you the LEGAL copy for cheap?
Two options… Ebay and Amazon.com. Keep scouring them over and over and over… but be cautious and ONLY buy non-educational versions that are in their ORIGINAL wrapping. If they’ve been used, you’ll need to get a license transfer from Adobe.
In the meantime, look at the cheap alternatives that are out there such as Gimp (gimp.org), a powerful opensource editor that is gaining speed in the Graphics world and has many of the features of Photoshop… but with a more attractive price: Free.
